Why should we have eight hours' sleep?
Written by Administrator
Saturday, 14 April 2007 16:03
" A survey is suggesting that only a tiny minority of us are getting eight hours' sleep a night. But do we really need that much?

"Getting your eight hours" is one of those injunctions, like drinking plenty of water or not to swim in canals, that most people take at face value.

When former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was reported to need only five hours' sleep a night, it was taken as evidence of a near-supernaturally tough constitution.

And it's become an increasingly common sentiment that too much work and stress and missing out on our eight hours is the modern plague. "

Dark Chocolate, But Not Tea, Takes a Bite Out of Blood Pressure

Friday, 13 April 2007 04:58
" MONDAY, April 9 (HealthDay News) -- Cocoa-rich products such as dark chocolate may help lower high blood pressure, but tea won't do much, according to a new survey of the medical literature by German researchers.

Although the thought of chocolate as a health food has captured public attention, not much research on the issue has been done, said a team from the University Hospital of Cologne.

Their report covered exactly 10 studies on cocoa with a total of 173 participants and five tea studies with 343 participants.

The benefits are believed to come from compounds known as polyphenols (or flavonoids), explained Dr. Dirk Taubert, senior lecturer in pharmacology and toxicology at Cologne and lead author of the report.

He leavened his support of chocolate with a bit of caution."

It's "the Sistine Chapel of crystals," says Juan Manuel García- Ruiz.

The geologist announced this week that he and a team of researchers have unlocked the mystery of just how the minerals in Mexico's Cueva de los Cristales (Cave of Crystals) achieved their monumental forms.

Buried a thousand feet (300 meters) below Naica mountain in the Chihuahuan Desert, the cave was discovered by two miners excavating a new tunnel for the Industrias Peñoles company in 2000."

The Best Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs: PM Lab Test
Written by Administrator

" Published in the May 2007 issue.

The compact fluorescent light bulb revolution nearly occurred back in the early 1990s. When CFLs first hit the market in force, consumers bought them in large numbers — but they hated them. The bulbs were too big for many fixtures, expensive (up to $25 each) and they threw a dim, antiseptic light that paled next to the warmth of good old-fashioned incandescent bulbs.

Now, a new CFL revolution is at hand. Retail giants are pushing hard for the bulbs — Wal-Mart hopes to sell 100 million CFLs by the end of the year. In California, a legislator recently proposed banning the sale of incandescent light bulbs in the state by 2012. "

" By ROHAN SULLIVAN, Associated Press Writer SYDNEY, Australia

 - Australia's largest city plunged itself into near-darkness for an hour on Saturday night when city officials, thousands of businesses and many more residents cut the lights for energy conservation. The normally gleaming white sails of the Sydney Opera House darkened, as did the arch of the city's iconic harbor bridge, big chunks of the downtown skyline and countless homes in the city of 4 million in a gesture of concern about global warming. Incredible Growth for Solar Power Industry
Written by Administrator
Friday, 06 April 2007 11:44
" by Michael Graham Richard, Gatineau, Canada on 04. 4.07 The salmon-pink Financial Times reports today that the solar equipment industry is on a path to grow amazingly fast: From 20 billion dollars last year to 90 billion dollars in 2010.

"Profit growth is expected to accelerate even faster, as costs are contained, pushing margins up to nearly 60 per cent." These high profits hopefully will mean more capital investments into production facilities and R&D (which will help further decrease costs), and more companies entering that sector. "

Are humans hard-wired for faith?

" By A. Chris Gajilan CNN NEW YORK (CNN) --

"I just know God is with me. I can feel Him always," a young Haitian woman once told me. "I've meditated and gone to another place I can't describe. Hours felt like mere minutes. It was an indescribable feeling of peace," recalled a CNN colleague.

"I've spoken in languages I've never learned. It was God speaking through me," confided a relative. The accounts of intense religious and spiritual experiences are topics of fascination for people around the world. It's a mere glimpse into someone's faith and belief system. It's a hint at a person's intense connection with God, an omniscient being or higher plane.

Most people would agree the experience of faith is immeasurable. Dr. Andrew Newberg, neuroscientist and author of "Why We Believe What We Believe," wants to change all that. He's working on ways to track how the human brain processes religion and spirituality. It's all part of new field called neurotheology. "

Mankind Has Never Been Healthier, Wealthier or Freer. Surprised?

" Written by INDUR M. GOKLANY    Wednesday, 04 April 2007

Environmentalists and globalization foes are united in their fear that greater population and consumption of energy, materials, and chemicals accompanying economic growth, technological change and free trade—the mainstays of globalization—degrade human and environmental well-being. Indeed, the 20th century saw the United States’ population multiply by four, income by seven, carbon dioxide emissions by nine, use of materials by 27, and use of chemicals by more than 100. Yet, overall, the world has never been healthier, wealthier or freer... "
