" For years I half-heartedly fed the wild birds at my decorative feeders. I thought it was an interesting way to liven up the yard from time to time.
But that mindset changed one day when a chickadee landed on my daughter's shoulder...
Here's how she started feeding birds by hand...
I used to keep a bag of sunflower seeds by the front door for our bird feeder and on occasion would dump a quart or two of seeds into our bird feeders. "

Research deciphers "deja-vu" brain mechanics |
MIT news
" Deborah Halber, News Office Correspondent June 7, 2007
Neuroscientists at the Picower Institute for Learning and Memory at MIT report in the June 7 early online edition of Science that they have identified for the first time a neuronal mechanism that helps us rapidly distinguish similar, yet distinct, places. The discovery helps explain the sensation of déjà vu.
The work could lead to treatments for memory-related disorders, as well as for the confusion and disorientation that plague elderly individuals who have trouble distinguishing between separate but similar places and experiences. "

The slow life: Real blue sky thinking |
" By Dean Irvine for CNN
LONDON, England (CNN) -- Do you have the feeling that life is getting away from you, that there aren't enough hours in the day to get everything done? Don't worry, it's not just you, the pace of city life really is speeding up.
A recent survey by the University of Hertfordshire and British Council found that city dwellers are walking 10 percent faster than in 1994. Singapore topped the list with locals rushing around 30 percent faster than they were in the early 1990's.
Deliberately slowing your walking pace in the city against this rising tide of rushaholics could see you swiftly swatted out of the way by irritable commuters, but just by toning down the nagging sense that you have to do more, and do it faster, can have plenty of long term benefits. "

Omega-3 fatty acids reduce blood pressure: study |
" DALLAS (Reuters) - A diet with liberal servings of fish, nuts and seeds rich in nutrients called omega-3 fatty acids can help lower a person's blood pressure, according to a study released on Monday.
"A large percentage of people between ages 20 and 60 have a rise in blood pressure, and by middle age many have high blood pressure," said Dr. Jeremiah Stamler, professor emeritus of preventive medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago, who worked on the study. "

Brain uses both neural 'teacher' and 'tinkerer' in learning |
MIT news
" While most people need peace and quiet to cram for a test, the brain itself may need noise to learn, a recent MIT study suggests. In experiments with monkeys, the researchers found that neural activities in the brain gradually change, even when nothing new is being learned. Challenging the monkeys to adjust their task triggered systematic changes in their neural activities on top of this background "noise."
The researchers said their findings suggest a new theory of how the brain learns. "

71 Optical Illusions & Visual Phenomena |
http://www.michaelbach.de/ot -
These pages demonstrate visual phenomena, and »optical« or »visual illusions«. The latter is more appropriate, because most effects have their basis in the visual pathway, not in the optics of the eye. When I find the time I will expand the explanations, to the degree that these phenomena are really understood; any nice and thoughtful comment welcome.

Optical Illusions: The Science of Visual Perception |
"Book Description
Seeing is not always believing.
Optical Illusions is an intriguing collection of baffling images and shapes that change before your eyes: hidden figures, incredible designs and dazzling graphic patterns. The book includes such well-known optical illusions as Shepard's Tabletop, Wade's Spiral, the Floating Finger illusion, Ames Room, and Rubin's Face/Vase illusion. There are more than 275 illusions in all, with explanations of each image and notes about the science of visual perception.
Every type of optical illusion is here, among them:
- Figure/ground illusions, in which one shape switches into another and back again
- Ambiguous figures
- Impossible objects
- Trompe l'oeil
- Stereo illusions.
With illusions rendered in photography, artwork and computer imaging, and its huge variety of themes and effects, Optical Illusions dazzles both the mind and the eye."

Be a Healthy Entrepreneur |
" Want a healthy company? Start by focusing on yourself.
For many entrepreneurs, it's easy to ignore the warning signs that you're unhealthy--much less take notice if your business isn't well. When you're so busy that you can't remember the last time you read a book, sat down for a meal or spent a night watching useless TV, then your health may be the last thing on your mind.
But ignoring your unhealthy habits and their subsequent risk factors is dangerous--not only to you, but also to your business. "
