Instant Enlightenment
"Does enlightenment have a dark side? It does, explains David Deida, "but instead of closing to what seems unloving, we can learn to open as what we would rather avoid." In Instant Enlightenment, this maverick author and teacher offers a "rude awakening" through a collection of daring exercises and practices intended to provoke, challenge, and immediately reveal the ever-present "love that lives all things." What's the filthiest thing you can say that still feels like, "I love you"? Can you "wear" the mood and shape of everyone and everything around you without fear or reservation? Which imagined action--sleeping, sexing, or dying to save another--most feels like liberation and unbound love? These are just some of the unconventional questions raised in Instant Enlightenment. Each pithy chapter encourages readers to blast the light of consciousness on the taboos we hide in shadow, from our ideas about sex and money to emotions and spirituality."

"Glycemic load" of diet has no effect on weight loss
By Amy Norton

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - When it comes to losing weight, the number of calories you eat, rather than the type of carbohydrates, may be what matters most, according to a new study.

The findings, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, suggest that diets low in "glycemic load" are no better at taking the pounds off than more traditional -- and more carbohydrate-friendly -- approaches to calorie-cutting.

The concept of glycemic load is based on the fact that different carbohydrates have different effects on blood sugar. "

Home Depot Announces Eco-Labeling Program
"ATLANTA, April 17, 2007 -- After years as environmental groups' poster child for irresponsible retailing, Home Depot today announced a new program to highlight environmentally friendly products on its shelves.

Home Depot has labeled more than 2,500 Eco Options products already, including all-natural insect repellents, compact fluorescent lightbulbs, cellulose insulation, front-load washing machines, and certified sustainable forestry products. By 2009, Home Depot expects the Eco Options label to grow to 6,000 products.

As part of the Eco Options launch, Home Depot plans to give away 1 million compact fluorescent lightbulbs at its stores on Earth Day, April 22. The company estimates that replacing 1 million incandescent bulbs with CFLs will result in savings of $12 million in annual energy costs and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by at least 147 million pounds. Spring Means Home Improvement
"

As the weather warms up and the days get longer, our minds turn to home improvement projects. Your home isn't just a place to live - it's also an investment, and likely a very lucrative investment at that. Did you know that the median U.S. home price has increased an average of 5 percent annually over the past five years, according to the National Association of Realtors?

For this reason, it's important to consider how well home renovations will hold their value when it comes time to sell.

Return on Investment.
While few renovations can be expected to fully pay for themselves come resale time, some clearly hold their value better than others. The Wall Street Journal has reported on national average costs and estimated returns for a number of different home improvement projects:"

How can I Make my Offline Life Easier?
" Most of us are already hip-deep in online efficiency tools like shared calendars, code libraries, and rss feeds; here are 30 simple ways that you can make your life (the real one) easier:

At Home

Synchronize recurring events. This can be done annually, monthly, or even weekly. As an example, there are many household tasks that really only need to be done annually. Make it easy to remember when they need to be done by doing them all on the same day. The switch to daylight savings time is a good time to check batteries in smoke detectors, clean screens and windows, change air filters, clean fireplaces, etc. You can do the same with your car, by checking your tires, wiper fluid, battery, etc., every time you get an oil change. Sacrificing one day a month to do household chores like laundry, cleaning, and gardening can relieve the burden of having those things hang over your head and follow you around during the rest of the month.

Re-key your locks. This is a fantastic way to cut down on the number of keys you have to lug around."

How to Have a Business Conversation

" by Ben Stein

In the course of climbing the corporate ladder, or of just managing the little corner of the world you occupy, you have to communicate with people. It's not always easy, but you have to do it. Some of this communication amounts to simple conversation, and it's been dawning on me for a long time now that a great many young people don't know how to have one. In fact, a great many older people don't know how to have a conversation, either.

Ten Conversation Tips
Frankly, I don't see how people can advance in their careers if they don't know how to have a conversation. For most people, work -- not investments -- is their livelihood. So I thought I'd offer up a few basic ideas on how to have a conversation with someone you just met.

 1. Begin by knowing that the people you're talking to mostly want to talk about themselves."

Do You Take Vitamins? Do You Need A Prescription? The FDA Thinks You Do!
"The FDA is attempting to regulate vitamins, herbs and juices as "drugs". If they achieve this goal, you would need a doctor's prescription for your multivitamins! Whole Foods stores would boast bare shelves, as the pharmaceutical industry stepped in!
When it comes to health freedom, this is the FDA's end game. A new FDA "guidance" document, published on the FDA's website, reveals plans to reclassify virtually all vitamins, supplements, herbs and even vegetable juices as FDA-regulated drugs. Massage oils and massage rocks will be classified as "medical devices" and require FDA approval. The document is called Docket No. 2006D-0480. Draft Guidance for Industry on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Products and Their Regulation by the Food and Drug Administration. "

The Power of Intention
"After years of spiritual study and reflection, inspirational speaker and bestselling author Wayne Dyer has emerged a highly esteemed teacher. His current message about tapping into the power of intention may sound like good old positive thinking: just stay focused on what you want, rather than focusing on the lack of having what you want. But the teaching here goes deeper than just controlling thoughts (although he does acknowledge that thought control is a surprisingly challenging and significant endeavor). This book might help readers land a better job, but it's more relevant for those who are ready to detach from an ego-driven life filled with quick fixes of happiness and step into a more authentic, joyful, and spiritually fulfilling life. His core teachings speak to tapping into a universal source of energy that can also be called the "power of intention." He calls people who are consciously co-creating with this energy source "connectors" and describes them as "individuals who have made themselves available for success...They don't say With my luck things won't work out. Instead, you’re more likely to hear something like, I intend to create this and I know it will work out."

Top 12 Greenest Vehicles
"  by Dan Lienert Forbes.com

You might be surprised to learn that you don't need to drive a hybrid car to do your part for the Earth.

Yes, of the year's 12 most environmentally friendly 2007 model cars — a list dominated by tiny, economical models — six are hybrids. And two gas/electric hybrids — Toyota Motor's Prius and Honda Motor's Civic Hybrid — are tied for first place.

But half of the cars are just old-fashioned, gas-powered vehicles that happen to be small and efficient, with low emissions.

For new vehicles, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), whose data we used to compile our list, issues air pollution scores and greenhouse gas scores, both of which are ratings from 0 to 10, with 10 being the highest. Only the Prius and Civic Hybrid have perfect greenhouse gas scores, but many cars tie for the top ranking on the air pollution scale (no new car has an air pollution score of 10, but several reach 9.5). Myth: Organization is the Key to Productivity
" The problem with commonsense is that it isn’t that common. I’ve read a lot of books on productivity and time management and they all seem to espouse the same basic idea. The false idea that the reason you aren’t productive is because you simply aren’t organizing, prioritizing and using your time efficiently.

Experimenting With Chaos

I used to believe this fallacy. Over a year ago I slowly moved my life to a highly organized state. My environment was highly ordered. My time was scheduled and blocked off. I had a highly ordered routine. My productivity skyrocketed and I was able to manage a lot more activities including working part time, keeping an A+ average in my classes, finishing my interactive software program, coaching minor soccer and regularly attending Toastmasters on top of numerous other tasks."
